EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique
EFT is a psychological acupressure that works on the same energy meridians as acupuncture. It uses finger tapping, rather than needles, to help clear long-held emotional patterns which in turn release negative emotions. It is excellent at sorting out phobias and gets brilliant results with all sorts of problems including emotional overeating. At an initial consultation you will identify the problem, decide how bad it is on a scale of one to ten and work out an honest statement about how you feel at that moment. You will repeat the statement as you rub points on either side of your chest. You will then choose a shortened version of the phrase and tap specific points on your face, upper body and hands.
You will be taught to tap, hum and count through a prescribed sequence, to take a deep breath and evaluate how you feel about the problem. The strength of your feelings should reduce - if they dont you will go round again. Although it sounds lengthy, once mastered it takes only two minutes to complete with amazing results. When you finally resolve your issue, you will be left with the memory without the associated feelings. The beauty of EFT is that you can top up your tapping any time you feel the need.
In the 1970's a psychologist called Dr Roger Callahan had a client called Mary who defied all of his attempts to cure her extreme phobia of water. Mary lived in California which ironically is surrounded by water. Mary even found taking a shower traumatic.
Dr Callahan had a little knowledge about meridian points. During one of his consultations with Mary and as they sat a distance away from his swimming pool he decided out of desperation to tap on one of her meridian points. He used the point directly under the eye and after a short time Mary got up and started to run towards Dr Callahan's pool. He shouted to Mary concerned that she had lost her senses and would just jump in. Mary turned and shouted back, "Don't worry Dr Callahan I know I can't swim!" Although Mary's phobia had dissipated she still possessed a healthy respect for the water.
Dr Callahan went on to develop 'Thought Field Therapy' and taught professionals the procedure. Unfortunately the cost of the training meant few could afford to become a practitioner. One person who did though was a Californian man called Gary Craig. Gary developed his own form of TFT which was easier to apply and called it EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. |
